Get to Know Kappa Alpha Theta
Kappa Alpha Theta, the first Greek-letter fraternity for women, is looking for leading women to join our newest chapter at Virginia Tech this spring.
Nearly 150 years ago, Kappa Alpha Theta was founded as the first Greek-letter fraternity for women. Our founders recognized dedication, intelligence, and commitment in one another, and they also understood the potential of the college women who would follow in their footsteps. They were leading the way for women in higher education.
In the decades since then, Theta has continued to be recognized as a leading women’s group. As individuals and as chapters, we are known for our leadership in our communities and on our campuses.
We are Kappa Alpha Theta. We are leading women and we hope that you will Think Theta!
Our Founding
Kappa Alpha Theta was founded on January 27, 1870 at Indiana Asbury (now DePauw University) in Greencastle, Ind. Our founders include Bettie Locke Hamilton, Alice Allen Brant, Bettie Tipton Lindsey and Hannah Fitch Shaw.
Our Mission
Yesterday, today, and tomorrow, Kappa Alpha Theta exists to nurture each member throughout her college and alumnae experience and to offer a lifelong opportunity for social, intellectual, and moral growth as she meets the higher and broader demands of mature life.
Our Values
Personal Excellence, Friendship/Sisterhood, Scholarship, Service, and Leadership
Our Philanthropy
For over 25 years, Kappa Alpha Theta has partnered with Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA). CASA is central to fulfilling society's most fundamental obligation by making sure a qualified, compassionate adult will fight for and protect a child's right to be safe, to be treated with dignity and respect, and to learn and grow in the security of a loving family.
Today, there are more than 77,000 advocates serving in nearly 1,000 state and local program offices nationwide. CASA programs across the country are known by several different names, including Guardian ad Litem, Child Advocates and Voices for Children. Since the inception of CASA advocacy, volunteers have helped almost 240,000 abused and neglected children find safe, permanent homes in which they can thrive.
Last year, Theta chapters raised over $800,000 for CASA programs and CASA for Children.
By joining Theta you have the opportunity to be a leading woman and positively impact Virginia Tech and your community while holding yourself to the high standards reflected in our core values.
